The Oriental Club Grade I

A new highly contemporary extension to the Grade 1 listed Stratford House, an important landmark building at the end of Stratford Place, once the largest private home in London. Now home of the Oriental Club the building had been operating as a private members Club with restaurant, entertainment, meeting and library spaces alongside members bedrooms and forms a key part of the vibrant and historic Westminster ‘gentleman’s’ club tradition.

Working closely with the Club, Westminster and English Heritage we coordinated an extensive historic research analysis and sought consent to demolish an existing disused stable building an inner courtyard/light-well. This was replaced with a new and contemporary 6 storey building, linked directly to the grade 1 rear of the existing building. The external wall, of glazed faience brickwork was repaired and is fully exposed in the new internal link corridor, with a structural glass threshold at top and bottom, clearly expressing the threshold between old and modern. The planning consent formed an important, new planning precedent in Westminster, with regards to commercial expansion.
